Corine PELLUCHON

Philosopher

Corine Pelluchon is a professor of political philosophy and applied ethics at Gustave Eiffel University. A specialist in medical, environmental, and animal ethics, she spent two years in Germany, notably at the Max Planck Institute in Berlin. She is the author of fifteen books, many of which have been translated, and has developed a philosophy of corporeality focused on vulnerability and the materiality of existence. Inspired by phenomenology, she proposes a relational approach to the subject, redefining ethics and politics. Her work integrates reflections on the human condition and cohabitation on Earth, while reinterpreting the legacy of the Enlightenment in the context of ecological and social crises. In 2020, she was awarded the Günther Anders Prize for Critical Thinking in Germany.
In her latest book, Being and the Sea, Pelluchon extends her philosophical inquiry by addressing existential ecological issues. She argues that traditional existentialism, which explores the contingency of our existence, must be enriched with a deeper ecological understanding. Drawing on a liquid ontology, she challenges the obsession with territoriality and the contradictions in international maritime law, calling for a reevaluation of humanity's place in the world starting from the sea. The book emphasizes the sea-mother as the origin of life and offers a vision of human immersion in the common world, free from the constraints of a terrestrial metaphysics.
