The available scientific literature makes it clear: the ecological transition of agricultural policies remains a promise characterized by difficult implementation. What, then, are the causes of this gap between law and reality? To understand this, my research addresses the central question of controlling ecological transition. How are legal categories, thresholds, and indicators politically negotiated? What are the unintended effects of environmental monitoring policies? What types of work do digital tools require? What phenomena do control techniques allow us to see and, most importantly, not see? How are the powers to reward and punish socially distributed within agricultural communities?
I explore these general questions through monographs that specify them further. In my thesis, I investigated a protective measure for hedgerows under the Common Agricultural Policy. Concurrently, I coordinated a collective inquiry into environmental enforcement agencies. Currently, I am studying the climate promises of carbon sequestration in agricultural soils. Analyzing these fields contributes to a political sociology of agriculture that is both engaged and critical. In the face of a proliferation of normative discourses and sophisticated devices, my research creates a space for the confrontation of knowledge aimed at continually renewing empirical elucidation.
