Abou Amani has been the Director of the Division of Water Sciences and Secretary of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme at UNESCO since 2021. He joined UNESCO in 2006 as a Programme Specialist at the multi-country office in Accra, before becoming the Regional Hydrologist for Africa (2010-2015) and then Chief of the Section on Hydrological Systems and Water Scarcity (2016). He also led the Executive Office of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Sector. Prior to UNESCO, he worked for over eight years at the AGRHYMET Regional Centre in Niamey, specializing in drought management in the Sahel. A Doctor of the École Polytechnique of Montreal, he is also a civil engineering graduate from the École Polytechnique of Thiès, Senegal.
