Gaëlane GAVOILLE

Gaëlane GAVOILLE

12-year-old student in 7th grade

Gaëlane is a 12-year-old student in 7th grade.
She is part of a project-based class: the Participatory Science class.
This class manages an Educational Land Area.
An Educational Land Area is a project led by one or more classes, where students collectively think about preserving a small piece of land they choose close to their school (in this case, the Crégy-les-Meaux leisure park next to the middle school).
Gaëlane has been involved in this project since 5th grade.
In fact, the Educational Land Area project is part of the transition between 5th and 6th grade.
Upon entering 6th grade, Gaëlane joined the garden club, which also manages the Educational Land Area.
The students received permission from the town hall to take care of a remote area of the park that has no leisure activities. They conducted an assessment of the area, which led to several questions.
From these questions, several issues emerged:
"What is biodiversity? How can we measure it? How can we raise awareness among residents?"
Several actions have been implemented with the help of scientific experts:

Creation of a tree identification key specific to the park's trees and the creation of a wildflower meadow to increase the number and diversity of pollinator insects with the help of a botanist.
Implementation of the Vigie Nature School protocols from the National Museum of Natural History to identify garden birds and insects with the help of an expert naturalist.
Raising awareness among parents about the importance of preserving bats through a nighttime event in the leisure park with the help of an expert naturalist.
