Paul WATSON

Paul WATSON

Environmental activist and founder of the organization Sea Shepherd

Paul Watson is a Canadian animal rights activist and the founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Starting his activism in 1968, Watson joined the Canadian Coast Guard, serving in sea rescue hovercrafts, and later worked on a Norwegian merchant ship. He became involved with Greenpeace in the late 1960s, participating in protests against nuclear tests and contributing to its formation. Watson sailed on Greenpeace vessels, such as the Astral in 1972, and supported the American Indian Movement during the Wounded Knee Crisis in 1973.

In the 1970s, Watson continued his work with Greenpeace, notably campaigning against Soviet whalers in 1975. However, after disagreeing with Greenpeace's leadership, he was expelled in 1977 and founded Sea Shepherd. With the support of the Fund for Animals, he acquired the first Sea Shepherd vessel in 1978. His methods include confronting illegal whalers through direct actions like espionage and sabotage, actions which have led some to label him an "eco-terrorist." Despite criticism, Watson’s commitment to marine conservation and animal rights remains unwavering.
