Third-Places: a silent social revolution
What do a café, a community garden, a shared garage, a park, a public services centre, a connected campus, a coworking space and a shared workshop all have in common? These spaces, known as third places, are much more than just places where people pass through. Inspired by the sociologist Ray Oldenburg, they are based on two essential principles: accessibility and hospitality. They are places where people meet, share and sometimes even take refuge.
Today, these sociable spaces are under threat. The model has been taken over by giants like Starbucks and coworking chains, transforming these places into simple consumer or work hubs. But what remains of the original idea? How can we preserve their human and social dimension, which is vital to our democracy and our collective commitment?
Join us to find out how to reinvent these living spaces and defend them against commercial abuses.
