Taking care of our resources: the new luxury

At a time when businesses and their stakeholders are increasingly integrating environmental transition challenges, major luxury Houses have a key role to play in reducing their impact on natural ecosystems. Climate, soils, water... How do these often century-old Houses address these issues and integrate the necessary regeneration of the fragile supply chains that feed their raw materials into their strategies?

In front of a panel of biodiversity and climate experts, representatives from four Houses will share their initiatives and the complexities they face in evolving their models and creations. This will highlight the work of a sector that is accelerating its environmental transition in order to preserve its craftsmanship. When luxury learns from nature to reinvent its practices and reconcile excellence with responsibility.

What if the answers to the ecological and societal challenges we face were right before our eyes? Artificial intelligence: a cost (too high) for the planet

Artificial intelligence, and more precisely generative AI, is omnipresent in our lives today. It has revolutionised the way we use digital technology on a daily basis, enabling GPS systems to calculate our itineraries or our smartphone keyboards to predict the word we are going to write. It has also transformed many sectors, from predictive medicine to human resources and finance. But behind each of these actions, data centres, which are particularly energy-hungry, operate night and day to process and analyse this information. The ecological footprint of AI is estimated to represent around 5% of the environmental impact of data centres in Europe, and is set to increase by 20-25% a year over the next decade. Digital technologies also require rare raw materials, adding to the pressure on ecosystems. There is therefore an urgent need to reflect on the place of AI, its use and its impact, in order to question its raison d'être, its usefulness and its uses. But to reduce the impact, we need to measure the scale of the impact of this hyper-growth universe and bring together businesses, public authorities, research bodies and associations to create common frames of reference and promote frugal alternative solutions. Are technical and technological innovation compatible with the restoration of ecological and human balances?

What's the cost of our values?

What price are we prepared to pay to defend our values? In a world focused on performance and profit, this question is rarely asked. And yet, every day we have to make choices, whether at work, at home or in our relationships. Are we prepared to pay more for a product that is grown locally or respects demanding social and environmental standards? Are we prepared to pay more tax to promote culture? It's often tempting to give in to the easy way out or to profitability. But every decision has a cost, sometimes invisible but very real. The race to the bottom is a social and ecological disaster, and the polluter pays principle does not work. Companies that are ecologically virtuous do not benefit from any advantages for being so. So when will we see a tax bonus or boost for virtuous products? The idea of a Circular VAT, with tax rates differentiated according to the environmental and social impact of products or services, is beginning to gain ground. More than ever, it is becoming essential to redefine a ‘fair price’, not just in financial terms, but by taking into account the human and moral impact of our choices. The answers we come up with to these questions shape the ‘economic-ethical’ preferences that are now decisive in our societies. Our economies and democracies must rise to this major challenge.

A sedentary lifestyle kills more people than smoking! This is the warning issued by cardiologist François Carré. Spending hours on end behind a screen increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's... and even myopia. Like diet, physical activity plays a key role in our health. In 2022, the UN revealed that one person in eight in the world was obese, a figure that illustrates the scale of this epidemic. Faced with the rise in chronic diseases, dubbed ‘the diseases of the century’, the good news is that we have the power, individually and collectively, to take action.
In this session, we will explore how our daily choices - physical activity, diet, screen time - influence our health and well-being. By analysing the barriers to change, we will propose practical solutions for adopting healthier, more sustainable lifestyles. But it's not just a question of individual responsibility: what role should public authorities and businesses play in safeguarding our health? Prevention, education, information... How can we create a positive and enjoyable dynamic?
